Winter 1998-1999 Feature
Heading
into the Holidays
by
Shawn Barrett
As
fall began winding down, the UCS crew was busy on back
to back jobs in Byhalia, Mississippi, and New Albany,
Ohio.

New Albany First Church is located in
a unique Georgian style community.
On November
11, our crew arrived in Byhalia, Mississippi. Their
mission: build a 120' octagon for the Mt. Zion
Missionary Baptist Church. This was our first project
with C&C General Construction, Inc. We are currently
working with them on a 90’ geodesic dome for another
Missionary Baptist Church in Concord, Mississippi. We
are waiting for winter to arrive in Michigan so we can
make a trip down to meet father and daughter Charles and
Chandra White from C&C General Construction as well
as on-site supervisor, Bob Clayton.
On the 15th
our crew finished in Mississippi and headed north to New
Albany, Ohio. The next morning they began assembling a
90' square for the New Albany First Church of the
Nazarene. The crew would like to send a thank you out to
Kurt Bosworth. Kurt offered to work with our crew, which
was short one man. The crew would also like to thank the
church for the wonderful luncheon and the great food.
New Albany is very
beautiful; all the architecture is old Georgian style.
Ann and Shawn were lucky to get a tour while they were
visiting the job site.
New Albany faced
stringent fire codes, and in order for the structure to
meet the requirements, all of the steel hangers and hubs
had to be wrapped in timber. This helps the steel
connectors hold up for more time in case of a fire. Wood
retains a significantly higher percentage of its
original strength for a longer period of time; losing
strength only as material is lost through surface
charring.
